Goals from Ariff Aziz, Haziq Malik and last season’s top goal-scorer Fazlie Johar saw Marceles Juniors FC come from behind to dramatically win the Sunday Premier League Div One crown for the third straight year. Tied on points, Grampus Rise came into their final game of the season with a superior goal difference needing only a win against Joga Bonito, whom they had beaten 1-0 earlier in the season, to secure to title.
Unfortunately for the reigning Division Two Champions, the match ended 2-1 in favour of Joga Bonito at the Cage Sports Park. Two goals in within a span of four mins in the first half gave the home side a mountain to climb going into the break. Grampus couldn’t have asked for a better start to the second half when they pulled a goal back in the 42nd min after capitalizing on a defensive mix-up. Despite Grampus’s best efforts, Joga Bonito’s resolute defence stood strong, helping their team hold onto the score-line till the final whistle.
The results this week see Marceles Juniors end the season with 34 points, three ahead of second placed Grampus Rise with I.B.FC finishing as the second runner-up with 28 points. The X-League would like to congratulate Fazlie Johar of Marceles Juniors who ends the season as the MVP for Division 1.

Grampus Rise maintained the pressure on league leaders Marceles Juniors FC with a fine display which saw them come away 2-0 winners against Nautical FC at the Cage Sports Park. Two well taken penalties by Man of the Match Abdul Razak in the first half was enough to seal all three points for the home side who will now face Joga Bonito in their final scheduled match of the season. A win could see Grampus finishing Champions after having won the Div 2 title last season. This is of course dependant on the result between Marceles Juniors and a dejected Nautical FC side who were relegated to Division 2 following the result earlier today.

Over at Bedok South Secondary, I.B.FC threw away their chance of finishing second in the league standing following a shock 3-1 loss to Espanyol Elite. The match was a tale of two halves with Espanyol dictating play the moment the match kicked off. With the half-time score reading 2-0 in favour of the away side, few would have predicted that they would go on to lead 3-0 in the 56th min despite I.B.FC piling on the pressure. Saiful Fazrie bagged the top goal-scorer award when he converted a penalty two mins before the final whistle to bring the final score to 3-1.

Two goals by leading top goal-scorer Saiful Fazrie in the first half coupled with Faedzal Zainal’s fine effort in the 48th min saw I.B.FC beat Nautical FC 3-0 in a one sided affair at Bedok South Secondary. Defending Champions Marceles Juniors may have won Season 1 and 2 of the X-League but they’ve lost every single match they’ve played with I.B.FC to date. Coming off a hard fought 2-1 win over current league leaders Grampus Rise, I.B.FC looked on track to garner their third straight win against their arch rivals. So it was to everyone’s surprise when defending top goal-scorer, Fazlie Johar, slotted the ball into an empty net in the 2nd min of play after he had the goalie on the ground with a ‘fake shot’ to give Marceles a 1-0 lead. A fumble by the opposing goalkeeper in the 17th min saw Taufeeq pouncing on a loose ball to bring the score-line to 2-0. Saiful Fazrie managed to pull a goal back for I.B.FC five mins before half-time when he cooly slotted home a controversial penalty that had been heavily contested by the Marceles players. His goal however, would prove to be a consolation as the defending Champions held on for their first win against their opponents.

Grampus Rise has been on fire this season winning all five of their matches to date. We knew it would take a gargantuan effort to defeat them and IBFC delivered not only with an amazing performance but a disciplined one at that. The opening quarter of the game was a cagey affair with both sides always threatening on the counter. A weak parry by IBFC’s goalkeeper in the 28th min presented Grampus Rise with the easiest of tap-ins to take the lead. HT 1-0. IBFC came out of the break with their game-plan in place and deservedly equalised through Azri Majilan in the 55th min when he slotted home Norhafiz aka Afro’s pass across goal. Six mins later, Afro rose majestically above Grampus’s defence and thundered a powerful header past the outstretched goalkeeper sending his bench into a frenzy. Credit must be given to IBFC’s defence who held out valiantly in the final fifteen minutes of the game to keep the scoreline at bay.

Marceles Juniors FC edged long time nemesis Espanyol Elite 2-1 at Marsiling Secondary school, scoring the winner with only two mins left to play. It took just 22 mins for Marceles to find the back of the net courtesy of a close range tap in by Fazli. Espanyol Elite then clawed their way back into the game with a well struck volley by Ismail from the edge of the penalty box in the 25th min. HT 1-1. Both teams created an equal amount of chances after the break but were denied time and again. Two mins before the final whistle, one of the X-League’s most prolific goalscorers, Fazlie Johar aka Ayie Stevo, clinically slotted the ball into the back of the net after connecting sweetly with a low cross from the right flank.

Nautical FC garnered their first win of the season beating relegation bound O.N.E Utd at The Cage Sports Park. The score-line might have been different however if O.N.E Utd didn’t start the game with only eight men. Team attendances for matches can often kill a team’s ambition to finish in the top half of the table and O.N.E Utd has faced this problem on more than one occasion this season. So it was no surprise when Royston Poh scored the fastest goal in X-League’s history taking only 45secs to find the back of the net. He then bagged his hat-trick by the 14th min before Ben made it 4-0 with a low drive from outside the box in the 27th min. Royston then capped off a miserable first half for O.N.E Utd ten mins before the break when he latched onto a through ball and placed it past the keeper. Two players joined the O.N.E Utd squad in the second half but not before Royston became the first player to score five goals in a match when he tapped in a rebound in the 55th min. With the squad strengthened to 10 men, O.N.E Utd tried their best to get back into the game hitting the bar on two occasions. Unfortunately for them, the ‘All for ONE’ motto seems to be missing at the moment.

It was 1-1 just two mins later when Haikal dribbled past a defender before calmly slotting it past the outstretched keeper. HT 1-1. A brilliant counter attacking move for Arima in the 46th min saw a player dummy the ball for his team-mate, Sabri, who blasted it into goal. Their lead however was short-lived as Joga equalized just seconds later through Mansur. It was all Joga from then on with Shafir aka ‘John Hunter’ leading the pack in the 49th min a shot that bounced off the post after a ‘No look pass’ from his team-mate in the penalty box. Further goals from Shafir, Mansur, Parthiban and a long range effort from Prasath brought the final score-line to 7-2 reinforcing Joga’s position as genuine title contenders.

League leaders Grampus Rise took on in form O.N.E Utd who were coming off a 7-1 win over Espanyol Elite last week. It didn’t take long for the ball to find the back of the net in this clash with Razie giving Grampus an early lead in the 7th min when he powered in to send his bullet header into the net from point blank range. Razie then grabbed his second of the game heading home a free kick after cleverly beating the offside trap in the 29th min. HT 2-0. Both teams came out of the break all guns blazing but it was Grampus that further extended their lead with a tinge of controversy in the 48th min. Ismail finished off a brilliant counter attacking move but only after O.N.E Utd were denied a penalty seconds earlier. O.N.E Utd once again found themselves at the wrong end of another well crafted counter attack in the 56th min with Ismail clinically placing the ball past the goalkeeper. Zakry finally found the net for O.N.E Utd following some great build up play in the 65th min but it served as a consolation as Grampus held on for the win.

Div One first runner-up IBFC couldn’t have asked for a better start to the season beating newcomers Joga Bonito 4-1 over at Ang Mo Kio Secondary. Hat-trick hero Saiful Fazrie opened the scoring for IBFC in the 20th min when he latched onto a brilliant through ball which was played over the defence before flicking the ball past the goalkeeper. Ten mins later Halik headed home a carbon copy of the first goal to give IBFC a comfortable 2-0 lead going into the break. A mazy run down the right flank in the 60th min saw Saiful dribbling past the last defender before coolly finishing into the far post. Still suffering from the shock of going 3-0 down despite having just as many opportunities to score, Joga found themselves 4-0 down just two mins later when Saiful capped his hat-trick following some fine counter attacking play. Joga Bonito finally managed to find the back of the net through Kartik in the 75th min but just like O.N.E Utd, it served as a mere consolation.

Espanyol Elite secured their first win of the season beating Nautical FC in a seven goal thriller which almost saw one of the greatest comebacks in the social football scene. Espanyol were 3-0 up by the 27th min of this clash thanks to hat-trick hero Rahmat who exuberated clinical finishing in all his attempts at goal. Going into the break, Nautical looked like a side dejected and prone to conceding more goals in the second half...or so we thought. HT 3-0. So it was to everyone’s surprise when Robin headed the ball into goal after it had been been parried onto his path by the Espanyol goalkeeper who had just made a brilliant save from a free-kick. William in true ‘Wallace-Braveheart’ fashion then added to Nautical FC’s goal tally with a superb curler that left the keeper no chance the moment it left his boot in the 61st min. Royston then capped off Nautical’s amazing comeback when he tapped the ball into goal following some fine build up play. Nautical’s fairytale comeback however was not meant to be as Robin headed in a corner kick four mins from time to seal Espanyol’s first win of the season.
