Having suffered back-to-back defeats, few would have given them a chance against the division’s top side. However, in football, anything can happen, and Man of the Match Aldren Koh made sure of that with an extraordinary four-goal display.
The tone was set in the twenty-sixth minute when Chew Wei Jian opened the scoring for the home side. What followed was a ruthless five-minute blitz from Aldren Koh, who bagged a stunning hat-trick before half-time, leaving Acolytes shell-shocked and trailing four-nil at the break. Before they could recover, Piriyev struck again in the 10th minute, doubling Druzhba’s advantage and leaving Southern Flowers with a mountain to climb. The hosts responded quickly, with Aldren Koh pulling a goal back just four minutes later, setting the stage for an intense battle.

Facing a Sparta Cowboys side reeling from a narrow 3-2 loss to Druzhba FC, the Acolytes struck first through Syafiq Juraimi, whose composed finish in the 20th minute gave the home side a slender 1-0 lead at halftime.

The opening clash saw promoted sides FootPanda FC and Southern Flowers lock horns. Despite their neck-and-neck rivalry in Division 3 last season, this encounter was one-sided. Southern Flowers cruised to a dominant 4-0 victory, courtesy of first-half strikes from Chee Choong and Devin Yi, followed by second-half finishes from Ari Storm and Aldren Koh. It was a perfect start to their campaign, leaving FootPanda still searching for their first points.
Next up, newcomers Box2Box FC delivered a statement of intent against Acolytes FC, dismantling last week’s 3-0 winners in emphatic style. Fazlur Rahman, the Man of the Match, stole the show with a sensational hat-trick, while J. Rhuban added a brace to complete the rout. Week 1: Lights Shine Bright in Acolytes’ Debut as Sparta Cowboys Gallop to Victory
The curtain was raised on Season 16 of Division 2 of the Sunday Premier League with two highly anticipated matchups, showcasing both new talent and returning contenders.
The Acolytes FC, making their X-League debut, lived up to their motto, Jogar Para Excitar (“Play to Excite”), with a commanding 3-0 win over fellow newcomers Westo FC at Clementi Town Secondary. The Lights, as they’re fondly known, took the lead in the 16th minute through Edric Shem Pereira’s composed finish. Jerome Thomas doubled the advantage in the second half before Muhammad Fadhli sealed the victory in the 57th minute.
Reflecting on the win, the Acolytes said: “Boys were rusty in the first 20 minutes after not playing for close to a month. But we gradually grew into the game. 3 goals, 3 points, and a clean sheet to boot! Overall solid team performance. Unbeaten in 7, we go again next week!” A debut win and a clean sheet will certainly boost their confidence as they continue their journey in the league.
In the second game of the week, Sparta Cowboys kicked off their season with a strong 3-1 victory over newly promoted FootPanda FC, who finished third in Division 3 last season. Sparta’s opener came in the 12th minute via an unfortunate own goal, before Ikram Ilhami made it 2-0 with a precise strike.
FootPanda pulled one back through Yusoff Tahir in the 30th minute, but their hopes were short-lived as Afiqul Zulhilmi restored Sparta’s two-goal cushion just a minute later. Despite an improved defensive effort from FootPanda in the second half, the scoreline remained unchanged, giving Sparta the perfect start to their campaign.
