Team Report

This was the Lions biggest test as they faced the league leaders. The Chinese team tried to intimidate the players with rough play but the Lions are not cubs.

Unfortunately the Lions made 2 avoidable errors as the all-new defence probably started nervously with debuts for Akmal and Wahid replacing Omar and Raziff who left the team recently. Star FC pulled our wingback wide but the defence was slow to cover. The Dragon's winger pulled the ball back, finding their striker in front of the entire defence, giving Star FC the lead. Then 10 minutes later, a near identical goal was duplicated giving our opponent a 2-nil lead.

The Lions nearly scored as a Hail Mary pass from Qamarul was controlled expertly in mid-air by Ivan, who turned in and found himself 1-on-1 with the keeper, but his powerful shot was met with equal acrobatics from the Chinese keeper.

We thought the score would maintain at 2-0, but a diving header from a corner just before half time extended the opponent's lead making our comeback much harder.

Revitalised at half time, Captain Malik was sent in to rule the middle of the park, with Soksan coming on at right wing to cause a lot of trouble to the Star defence.

The changes surprised Star FC as they suddenly found a much stronger team playing, as Roberto who was rested in the first half was slotted at Number 10 to partner Ivan up front causing the Star FC centerbacks a lot of headaches with their impressive ball control and penetrating runs.

The Lions suddenly had 3 open chances to score, as the Star defence got desperate and resorted to questionable rough play to prevent Ivan and Soksan from scoring. The ref somehow did not call 2 clear cut penalties as Ivan and Soksan were clearly manhandled in the box.

Malik collected the ball from a poor pass, and dashed into the third quarter of the field before unleashing a through ball for Ivan to pounce, and he made his chance count this time, scoring for the 3rd game in a row.

The Lions controlled the game from then on, and Star FC sensed that they were losing their momentum. This made them play with more questionable rough tactics as their tackles caused injuries to both strikers and defenders that at one time we had to play with only 9 men on the field!

Despite this numerical disadvantage, the Lions pressed on, and substitutes were sent in to calm the situation. However, time ran out for us as the ref blew for full-time.

The scoreline certainly did not do justice to the way we played. This was a game that we should have won.
