Team Report

Morning haze has disappeared right before 3pm, and it was another game under hot scorching sun. This afternoon USSR was missing several players with only 11 plus one injured confirmed for the game. Our top goalscorer Bugra was one of the missing players leaving us with almost no hope for positive result despite return of Pasha V back to the lineup. Just as I said last week, the beauty of X-League is that no matter what every team is competitive, and quality of referring is quite decent.

As usual, with strong opponents and hot weather, we were going to let opposition control the ball while relying on deep passes to create danger. The gameplan seemed to work well in the first half. Our defenders were playing very solid not allowing many scoring chances to the opposition. On the other side of the pitch, we earned a seemingly soft penalty. Our defensive midfielder was running inside POS's penalty box with the ball parallel to their goals when a slight touch from behind made him lose footing (he is a tall guy 1.85m) but not falling down as he stumbled towards corner flag losing control of the ball. Referee whistled for a freekick which is an automatic penalty in the penalty box. Samir has stepped-in to convert and effortlessly scored (1-0). For the most of the first half the game was battled in the middle. Both teams had several corner opportunities, and we scored from one of them. Alisher played short to Samir who turned around and beautifully crossed onto the head of on-rushing Pavel V. Nice goal! (2-0). Half-time.

Second half started with POS fielding some players who came late to the game. Evidently, they fielded a stronger team and took control of the game with fast pace passing, lots of movement without the ball and some clever positioning. At times, I thought we will fall apart and even draw looked like a lucky result. POS scored relatively quick goal. Luring our central defenders towards center of the pitch, a through pass followed which was chased by their No. 11. He flicked the ball over our goalkeeper and scored a nice goal (1-1). Positioning mistake on our side. Later on POS managed to hit a crossbar, to miss several open goal opportunities and to serve numerous crosses from both flanks but USSR stood firm. Our goalkeeper was very reliable too. POS did manage to score a goal but it was rightly ruled out because their player picked a pass fro goalkick inside penalty box which is not allowed: ball needs to roll out of the box first. As the game was coming closer to the end and POS becoming more desperate, we finally started to organize decent counterattacks with Pavel V failing couple of one-on-one opportunities and once hitting a post. The final whistle caught POS in another attack but the time finally ran out. 2-1 - the final score.

Excellent result giving limited choice of players and a very strong opposition. This means we are save on 4th place with very limited chance of the 3rd. POS is still the favorite to win our division with 6 games still to play.
